IITs, Engineering Education in India

IITs, Engineering Education in India

1. There were 5 IITs & everything seemed fine, then we diluted the brand by creating, and rebranding 18 more, hoping it will automatically replicate the original successes. In US there is only 1 MIT, and 1 Stanford. 2. The quality of Engineering education(- 5 originals, BITs & few others) are pathetic. Post graduation, Ph.D. is a requirement in many Engg fields. The scope of non-IT job prospects is very limited. 3. Salary should match the industry median, if 6-10L/yr for a Civil Engg is right, then that is what it is, why compare with the Topmost bracket!? This is a serious problem of Expectation setting & management. 4. 4000 Engg institute needs to be cut to 1/10th. Forget the quality of intake, the infrastructure, and faculties are in the doldrums, no wonder the result. This needs to be fixed ASAP. 5. Agree fully on Soft skills training, Humanities, Cross-field opportunities, Undergraduate Research, and Industry co-op Absolute must. Student suicide is a horrifying event. But blaming the course content, rigidity & evaluation is detrimental to the discussion. Instead, we have to ensure the placement is right & people are placed by merit, capabilities & potential. Mixing levels result in these unfortunate events. We should concentrate on improving the quality of education, R&D opportunities, Industry collaborations, etc., instead of this fruitless we vs them narrative.
